I don’t get it, I mean, I really just don’t get it! I am so sick and tired of the hypocrisy that is plagues our country. My great nation and its leaders define us as “Defenders of Freedom” and will spend trillions of dollars and sacrifice thousands of innocent lives to fight for “freedom” all over the globe, and yet those same leaders continue to allow, and in many cases advocate injustices that are rampant right here at home. Politicians on both sides of the aisle tout freedom, and inclusiveness (i.e. “we are all Americans”, “inalienable rights”, etc.) but yet work hard to exclude rights to those they oppose. Religious radicals teach of God’s love and mercy in one breathe use another propagandize to condemn persons and groups who they deem deserving of the wrath and punishment of God. Men and women define themselves as people of faith and quote scripture that support their own agendas, but then seemingly ignore another scripture that would qualify many of their own actions “sinful” and “immoral.” The hypocrisy in America is never more evident than during election cycles – hell, in politics in general.
I watched President Obama’s State of the Union Address last night and then Gov. Mitch Daniel’s Republican response and on more than one occasion I was infuriated by the sheer hypocrisy that I heard. Let me set the record straight upfront – I did not vote for President Obama, nor am I his biggest fan. However, that does not mean that I am a card-carrying Republican either. I don’t have to be one or the other – I am an American. Period. Yes, I am also gay. But unlike many in my “community” I don’t feel the need or requirement to include my sexuality in the definition of my citizenship. I have no qualm with those that do, but none of us should have to! You are not entitled to something because you straight, just like I am not entitled to something because I am gay. We should all have the same rights, regardless of our gender, the color of our skin, the God that we worship (or not) and so on. But I digress…
So to digress even a little more, and in the interest of full disclosure, I have to admit that I guilty of being a hypocrite myself. I lived for 27 and ½ years hiding and rejecting the real me. I sat in the church pew praising God, but then I hated the “me” that He created. Even after I “came out” I hid who I am because I was worried about the thoughts and actions of others. I worried that people wouldn’t like me, or I was afraid that I would offend someone, namely my family. But the truth is, my family has been incredible. Though they may not be marching in any Pride parades (at least not yet, the invitation is open LOL! J), none of them have turned their backs on me, and have in fact showed unconditional love and for that I am eternally grateful. So the truth is, the real fear I had wasn’t my family – deep down I knew they would always love me – but rather I feared how others would treat my family because of their feelings towards me. And so I lived two lives – the me that was openly gay in clubs and bars, but was anything but elsewhere. Even today I am reserved about what I’ll share with others about “who I am” – SCREW THAT. I am who I am, and I have every right to live the life that God has given me. AND YEP, GOD MADE ME WHO I AM. IF HE WANTED ME ANY OTHER WAY, HE WOULD HAVE CREATED ME THAT WAY. I’ve reconciled who I am with my faith and I’ve come to the conclusion that I should have never had to do that in the first place and if it weren’t for the history of bigotry of this great nation, I wouldn’t have ever had to!!!!!! Again with the digression!
Okay, so now I’ve scolded myself, let me get to what I really wanted to do – SCOLD OTHERS (that’s always more fun, right!) For the sake of simplicity, let me reduce this my soapbox rant to a several bullet points:
1) GOD AND GAGA LOVE GAYS, GET OVER IT! = So you religious radicals want to cite those versus in Leviticus as reason that us evil gays don’t deserve to get married and will not enter the kingdom of God, etc. etc.. HAVE YOU READ THE BIBLE? Then what about the other things that Leviticus has to say!? The simple fact is that the Bible is man’s interpretation of God’s will. It is FULL of contradictions and if we were to take every single line of this work of literature for law, then we’re all screwed. You guys better start warming up to us homos, because you’ll be joining us in the pits of Hell! Like Mother Monster said, “A different lover is not a sin, believe capital H-I-M!” Just because you stand hide behind a pulpit, or preference your hate with a “Bless your heart!”, - HATE is HATE and I am pretty sure that I’ve read a verse or two where God addresses that! (oh, there you go again picking and choosing which versus you want to enforce!) Tisk, tisk!!!
2) I WANT TO MARRY MY PARTNER, NOT MY DOG! = Yes, Hudson is quite cute, but he’s not my type! In all seriousness, I think that it is absolutely laughable that some idiotic people say that gay-marriage is the slippery slope to men wedding children, animals and aliens. It’s not even a valid argument so I’m not going to waste my time defending it. This one is NULL and VOID.
3) STOP TELLING ME WHAT OUR “FOREFATHERS” WANTED, INTENDED, ETC.! = Yeah, we’ve got the Bill of Rights and the Constitution and those documents should guide our government’s actions. However, where in either of those documents, do our Forefathers specifically mention marriage!?! Anyone can Wikipedia a document and then twist it to fit their own agenda – (see Rick Perry, what a buffoon!) Hell, for the sake of argument, let’s say that our forefathers DID mention marriage… what does it matter today!? Some of our forefathers owned slaves and cheated on their wives… so does that mean that slavery and adultery is fundamental to our country!? EFF NO! I get so sick of the anti-gay movement using citing asinine reasons why THEY should get to dictate who can/cannot marry. I don’t tell you who you can and cannot marry, or what you can/cannot do in the bedroom, so leave your nose out of my business too! Moving on…
4) BEING GAY DOESN’T HAVE TO EQUAL DEMOCRAT! = Just because I am gay, doesn’t mean I have to be a Democrat. Democrats, the Clintons and President Obama, etc. are not the sole salvation for us queers. Okay, before I lose my gay-card, I will admit that the Donkeys certainly do more for us the Elephants and I applaud those who will fight for what is right. And the current President has helped us… SOME. But, Dems know what side their bread is buttered on, and they court and woo us with their words and love our dollars, but we should judge them by their actions, not just their promises. I mean, let’s face it! If it weren’t for Bill Clinton, we wouldn’t have to tire ourselves trying to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and there never would have been DADT. The current President and the Democratic majority that existed for the first 2 years he was in office could have done a lot more. But they do and continue to do what all politicians do – bow to whomever will get them reelected. I wish that there was a 1 term limit on every political office. Perhaps them the people that we elect will do what they SAY THEY WILL DO rather than promise one thing to get elected only to the another in order to get reelected.
5) HEY REPUBLICANS, WAKE UP! = Like one of my Facebook friends said last night… Mitch Daniels and the Republicans said in their response to the SOTU that the government shouldn’t dictate what mortgage I have, or what light bulb I use… then why in the hell should it dictate who I can marry!?! I really want to defend Republicans because I know that not all of you are bad, but you guys make it hard extremely hard sometimes!! Which is it? Are we all created equal or not? Should the government rule our lives or not!?! (And PS, if my open-homosexuality is a condemnable sin, what about your adultery, divorces and airport bathroom tactics!?! If Forgiveness if good enough for you, then it is for me too!) Now that I come to think about it, no wonder so many in my community equate being gay to having to sit on the left side of the aisle! GEEZ!
6) WE’RE GAY, NOT ALIENS – WE’RE REALLY NOT THAT DIFFERENT! = It’s so funny the stereotypes that so many try to assign to all homosexuals. We all love Madonna, Lady Gaga, Glee and religiously watch Bravo and all of the Real Housewives franchises. We all hate George Bush and God. We all sleep with anyone and everyone, certainly none of us are monogamous. The list goes on and on. And yes, many of us have the Material Girl in our disc collection, but so do a lot of straights, it’s freaking music. Truth-be-told, I feel like that we homos promulgate some of these stereotypes and I wish that we didn’t, but it’s crazy to think that everyone belonging to a group acts exactly the same way. Not all gays are whores, just like not all Christians are haters. We’re all different – that’s how God made us! We are all Americans, we are children of God, we are all HUMAN BEINGS. You get my point!!! In the words of RHOBH’s Taylor Armstrong, “You don’t have to be my friend, but please don’t be my enemy!” (okay, so maybe some stereotypes are a little true!)
7) HEY GAYS, WE’RE GUILTY OF BEING HYPOCRITES TOO! = So maybe I haven’t drank all of the Rainbow Kool-Aid, but I get angered when others put me in a box and I hate even more when my own “community” does it to me too! It’s crazy that we fight for equality and then attack someone in our community for being different (Example: Damn that Taylor Garrett for being a Republican, ARGH!!) It’s contradictory when we demand that others accept us for being different, but we won’t do the same. We cannot ask others to listen to us, if we aren’t willing to grant the same courtesy. We need to hold ourselves to a higher standard, because as long as we despise and hold contempt for those that oppose us, we’ll continue to receive the same thing in return. Can I get an AMEN!?
Ugh. I could go on and on and if I did, I’d sound like a bitter, hateful homo like the radical-right wants me to… the bottom line is that we are all equal. Or at least WE SHOULD BE!!! You should be able to marry, so should I! I should be able to share my beliefs, so should you! You can disagree with me and I can disagree with you! The simple fact is that we will never all agree and many times it would be so much easier if we could just agree to disagree!!! But that shouldn’t come at the cost of my freedoms and it is my sincerest hope that soon, this whole discussion will be a thing of the past. It seems impossible right now, but then again I think about the Civil Rights Leaders of decades past. I am sure that they felt the same way. I’ll never give up hope that one of these days I will be afforded the same rights as each and every one of my fellow Americans.
Now… who should I vote for!?! The plot thickens! J
